Description
Modern Arnis is a term used for describing the Filipino Martial Art system created by the late Professor Remy Presas after combining different Filipino Martial Arts with his many years of personal study. He assimilated all of these arts into a complete body of Filipino Martial Arts knowledge. Modern Arnis is a complete, complex and comprehensive system incorporating empty hand forms, stick forms, Filipino Jujutsu, grappling, kicking, Sinawali [weaving] training, Espada y Daga [stick and dagger], single knife attacks and disarms, hand to hand fighting [Mano-Mano], double stick, single stick, stick disarms as well combinations thereof.
Practicality
Modern Arnis is extremely practical in a day and age where personal safety is of the utmost importance. It is a system that you can be understood and applied even after the first few lessons, yet it can be practiced for the rest of your life.
Reality
This is a style meant for those of you ready for real combat training such as taught in our military. Keep this in mind when you are setting out to pick a martial school to meet your exact needs. It is common in Modern Arnis training to refer to vital parts of the body [throat, ribs, groin…] while learning and executing simulated knife and stick attacks, chokes and throws and breaks.
Curriculum
Lessons will begin with a basic stretching warm up and basic level twirling and spinning techniques of the sticks. This will lead into the Level I training including: foot work, 12 single stick strikes, 6 blocks, combination block and attack drills building a foundation leading into Higher Levels incorporating: sticking angles, double sticks blocks and strikes, parrying, boxing basics, empty hand vs. empty hand, empty hand vs. single stick, beginning grappling/traps and checks.
History
With over 35 years of martial art training, Sifu David Akrish has decided to devote the rest of his life to the teaching of Modern Arnis. With almost three decades in Choy Li Fut and Wing Chun Kung Fu and two decades in the dynamic, combative style of modern Arnis, his foundation is quite strong and diverse. Classes will be assistant instructor Teah Akrish during the week. Heaven and Earth MAA is not affiliated with any other organization and stands alone as a solo, independent school of martial arts.
